The Etsy store is a go.

Yes, faithful followers of this blog (if there are any of you left). I have done it. I finally started my Etsy store.

It's pretty pathetic how long it's taken me to get started, actually. I need to do better about getting on top of things...

Anyway, here's the link: https://www.etsy.com/shop/FaerytalesandFantasy?ref=l2-shop-header-avatar

As you may notice if you actually clicked the link and scrolled through the shop, I have a $1 art commission listing currently up. This deal is for you, if you want to leave me a review after you've commissioned something from me. Really. That's the only condition. I'm not so demanding, am I?
There are only five of those available, so if you want to buy one, I'd recommend doing so rather quickly.

Unfortunately, I don't have time for a long blog post right now. We've got a few extra kiddos spending the night here, so I've got to go "be social" and keep the house in some semblance of order before archery practice this afternoon. But I am determined to get up another post before Christmas, so keep an eye out for that.

In the meantime, have a few recent sketches that didn't make it onto my Etsy.

My newest character, Abbie. I've drawn her way too much lately.

Experimenting with styles. I actually colored her. With green hair. Yes I did.

And an Elsa 'cause why not.

(Have fun seeing how many of my characters you recognize on my Etsy. Maybe I'll have a special prize for whoever figures out the most. Yes, that would be fun. Leave a comment with your score.)

October Weather is the best weather.

It just is, okay? I can wear sweaters and long jeans and boots, and the leaves are pretty, and it smells nice outside. It's the only time of year I enjoy being outdoors.
Plus, it's the perfect weather for hot chocolate.

In honor of the cold weather. No idea who she is. She kind of looks like Mira, though... An older, modern Mira?
And filters because I can.

I have an obsession with vocaloids. I don't even listen to any of their songs, but I keep drawing chibis. Help me.

Miku.

Not a vocaloid! Bianka redraw. I'm working on coloring this one digitally. I'll post it eventually. XP
My friend Nixie's character Delilah. We're doing this Percy Jackson fanfiction thing, and this is her character. She's the daughter of Demeter, and she's really sweet, until you make her mad.
Left to right: Delilah, Isla (my character, daughter of Aphrodite), and Sunny (daughter of Apollo, Nixie's younger sister's character). My sister has a character too, but I was lazy and didn't draw her. Oops.

No idea who this is. But she looks like she could go to school with Bianka, Avalon, and the gang.

Also.
I watched The Reichenbach Fall.
Nothing will ever be okay.

Mostly arts. And then some Inside Out.

I really need to start blogging regularly. It's start to become a joke around the house--"Maybe I'll get something productive today." "Yeah, and maybe Dee will blog."
It's really sad, the lack of motivation I've had lately.

Listening to for King & Country and hand-lettering their lyrics makes me feel better.

I'm on a paper-doll making craze. With the light box I got for my birthday, they're so easy and fun to make. So currently, I'm working on a set of them and telling myself that they're "for my little sisters." (Admit it, you'd play with them too.) Having four little sisters, that's the number I'm making. Although I probably should have done five in the event that we all want to play at the same time.
I might have to do that now.
Curse you, brain.

Anyway, Josie is one of the dolls, along with Avalon, Bianka, and Rosalie (never posted any pics of her, so you'll just have to trust me when I say that she's one of my characters). These four don't have a story, but I like to say that they go to the same private school and have all sorts of adventures together. Wearing cute school uniforms.
My brain is weird like that.

Random sketch.
I decided to do an action pose? IDK. That's Marcia, one of my newest characters. (I know, I know. I come up with a character, post a picture of them, and then never mention that character again. I'm sorry. My brain just really likes coming up with people.)
Marcia's from this fantasy-sci-fi-steampunk-dystopian world, and the basic idea I have for the story is probably a little bit too much like The Hunger Games for me to get away with it. But I'm having fun, so I really don't care.
(Also Marcia's name is pronounced mar-see-uh. Not Marsha.)

Sashi, a character from Marcia's story.
See, here's the fantasy part of the story coming out. Sashi's a winged, which is a race of humanoid people with wings and birdlike claw feet. So yes, I did make her feet look weird on purpose. It was not a mess-up.

There's a filter on this one for the edges, but the random erased bits around her were I actually did on the paper. It was fun to play with. :3
Steampunk. So cosplaying as this.
Random doodle.
But like. I think I found my Halloween costume for this year.

So Inside Out was fabulous. By decree of Dee Aethelwyne, you are all hereby ordered to go see it if you haven't already. If you've already seen it, you have my permission to go see it again.
It was really, really good. Waaayyy better than Frozen. I'm basically like
and then I'm like
and then I really think about the feels and it's like
and then sometimes I pretend that I'm okay and just be like
Also this is my new favorite thing to say:
Check out Anger's newspaper though.

And everyone asks me who my favorite emotion is, but like, please don't make me choose. I really like them all, but my absolute favorite character is Riley. She just is. A few friends and I are planning a cosplay group, and I get to be Riley. Super excited.

Off to see Inside Out

I've been wanting to see Inside Out since... well, since before it was even released. As soon as I heard about it, really. It just looks so good. And really, really unique. The fact that the emotions are characters themselves--*crosses fingers for /finally/ an animated movie with good characterization*--just... I don't know. It really grabbed my attention, you know?
I JUST REALLY WANT TO SEE IT OKAY.

A family friend called on Sunday to let us know that the old drive-in theater about an hour away was actually showing it this week. We were going to see it Tuesday, but then the forecast called for rain, and who wants to watch a movie at a drive-in, while it's raining? So we moved it to tonight.

*squeals*

Excited because:
1) Inside Out. 'Nuff said.
2) It's a //drive-in theater.// How cool is that? I've never been to one before, and I'm really excited to see what it's like.
3) I think I've seen a grand total of six movies in theaters ever. My little siblings have seen even less. So just going to the movies itself is exciting.
4) I'm an excitable person.

Okay, that last point isn't totally true. My fifteen-year-old sister is far more excitable than me. Being the reserved, introverted person I am, I just don't show my enthusiasm outwardly--except in extreme cases. Such as the OYAN SW. But contrary to popular belief, I do get excited. I just keep it inside where it'll last longer.
And I get inwardly excited very easily. Can't wait for my dad to get home so we can eat and get out of here.

Anyway. I just needed to get all of that out. Thanks for listening to my ramblings. I'll be sure to post a review of the movie sometime in the near future.

Have a picture.

In which Dee rambles about stuff.

Not the most amazing gif ever created. But I drew it. And I am proud of myself.
Kaela Underkoffler. She looks all sweet and fun in this picture, but she's kind of a major pain.

The only thing I like about this picture is the hair. And possibly the jeans.

Made my little sisters a set of paper dolls. Avalon's on the left, and Bianka on the right.

Picture of all of their clothing.
I've got magnetic paper in my Amazon shopping cart. I think that'll be nice for future paper dolls. (Because seriously these were so much fun to make. I am totally doing more.)

I know it was over a month ago, but I'm just going to talk about my birthday for a minute. Or ten.

It was a bit rough starting off--family drama while I was still half asleep, yay--but by the end of the day things were much better. I got a /ton/ of Copics--a set of greys, brights, and a skin tone set. However, I already had that skin tone set, so we called Amazon to see about returning it. Turns out you can't return Copics. But they gave us our money back anyway, and I got to pick out a different set and then give the extra markers to one of my best friends. So it was cool.

And I got a silver wig. It's long and curly and absolutely perfect for cosplaying as Conni. (Although I wore it a little too much back in June and it's kind of a mess right now. But I will fix it.)

I also received a light pad for drawing. (It's like a light box, but in tablet form. Pretty cool.) It's immensely helpful for all sorts of art projects, including paper dolls and hand-animated gifs. So yeah, I'm loving that too.

For my birthday, my grandma also paid for part of the cost of my trip to Kansas, to the One Year Adventure Novel Summer Workshop. (In addition to my art obsession, I am also fully addicted to writing.) I had a blast, and came back with tons of memories, advice, and passion for my writing. I've been writing away the last several weeks, trying to get this novel finished before August 15--the OYAN contest deadline.
It's not easy, man.

I'm kind of just rambling, because this is what happens when I go for a month without posting and a lot of stuff happens. I feel the need to fill you all in, but then I get tired about halfway through.

I think I'm just going to sign off and go back to writing. Because I am severely behind today.

Someday, I'll post regularly.

I swear, it'll happen someday.

*skips apologies and excuses this time and just proceeds to throw art at you*
I really don't know.
Apparently she looks like a cross between Miku and Rin. I just think she looks like Bianka.
I really like steampunk.
Steampunk Girl is actually colored in shades of pink (pink Sharpie, no less). Half of me was like "Noooo you're ruining it" and the rest of me was like "YESSSS."

So I put it through a sepia filter and now all of me is happy.
I forgot to crop it oops.
Meet Rory, folks. I cosplayed as her the other day and I want her hair so bad please may I cut it now.

I've been wanting short hair for ages. Currently, my hair almost reaches my waist. Several of my friends--and friend's siblings--enjoy playing with it, which is okay by me, but I really don't like doing anything with it myself. It spends all of its time in either a ponytail or a braid.

BUT LOOK HOW CUTE AND SHORT AND AMAZING RORY'S HAIR IS. JUST LOOK AT IT.

I just really want short hair.
Also blue hair would be cool.
But I'll settle with just plain brown short hair if I'm only allowed one major change.
PLEASE.

So my birthday is tomorrow.
It's kind of funny, because I've been so focused on the workshop I'm going to in two weeks that I completely forgot about my birthday. (What is this thing called a birthday? You mean I have one of those?) And then yesterday Mum was like, "So what kind of cake do you want?" and I just gave her this blank stare for several seconds before it really sunk in.
I'm going to be seventeen.
Oh man.

Okay, actually, I've been seventeen in my head for weeks. A month, actually. Back in May was when I decided. It's my way of making up for last year, when I didn't completely realize I was sixteen until July. (True story. I told someone in an email that I was fifteen, two weeks after my sixteenth birthday. And then had to email back and tell them that, no, I'm actually sixteen now, I just don't know what I'm saying anymore.)

Tomorrow, I will be seventeen in both my mind and in actuality. It will be lovely.
I should probably get my permit sometime soon, though.

A sketch dump.

*whispers* May I be forgiven now?

Ever run into that problem when someone asks how you've been doing and you say busy, but then can't come up with a response when they ask "Doing what?"
That's kind of how I feel.
I should have this nice long list of excuses as to why I've neglected my blog for over a month. But I've got nothing. I don't even have I've been drawing a lot to excuse myself. I didn't even finish a sketchbook in the last month. (Although I am dreadfully close to running out of paper in both of mine.)

Chibi Dee.
I had this spectacular idea to draw a chibi of myself every day for a week, just to give myself something to draw. I think I managed about three days. And I only like how this one turned out.
Might color it digitally once I'm done with this post.

The t-shirt I'm wearing in that sketch is actually one of my favorites. It's this heathered grey color, with a black lacy design on the front. I love it. My sister says it makes me look goth. I really don't care. I kind of ruined the goth look with the bright red Converse I was wearing at the time.

Conni. Remember, Livvie drew her a while back?
I think this is the first time I've actually liked how a picture of Conni turned out.

This is my most recent piece of digital art. I spent pretty much all day yesterday on it, and tried out so many new coloring methods with it... I think my favorite part is the eyes. I had so much fun with those, even though they took forever.
Mum says her outfit makes her look like she's from Star Trek. I've never seen any Star Trek, nor do I know even a little bit about it, so I couldn't really say.

I've been poking around on Etsy more lately. I finally reached the decision to open the store in Mum's name, and have her "manage" it, even though I'll be doing all the drawing. (Currently, the only listings are for art commissions.) As soon as it's officially open, I'll post the link here. :)

Some people actually blog about useful topics. I don't know how they do it.

Happy Easter.

Sorry it's been so long since I posted last. I didn't think I'd be so busy Easter week, but I was. My mom and sister directed the Easter pageant at church, and I had my share of piano playing to do both Sunday morning and for the Good Friday service.

Speaking of that service...

We (the organist and I) played a song that had 21 verses on Friday. Not a typo--twenty-one verses. That's something you find in a Redwall book, not in real life. Who writes a song with twenty-one verses?

I did the background in approximately thirty seconds. Don't judge.
 Annie loves springtime.

Meet Finn Kellan, Annie's adopted little brother.
 Isn't he adorable?

He also has a dragon named Lora. Only Finn and Annie can see said dragon, because Finny's magical and Annie's... Well, she's Annie. I don't know how to describe her otherwise.

Can you tell I've never done this before?
Ever heard the song Take to the Sky by Owl City? Go look it up. It's from Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. I haven't seen that movie in years, so I can't exactly remember how good the actual film is. But I love the song. I want to hand-letter every single lyric in it.

Josie's character Ana.
Josie and I did an art swap kind of thing the other day, and this is what I drew for her. Ana's adorable, isn't she?

I just can't stop drawing Annie.
Annie is one of my favorite characters at the moment. She's just so cute and fun to draw.

I was going to ramble for a while about something extremely unimportant to give you guys something to read, but now I forget what it was.

Oh well.

There's Always Something.

I got up early this morning. I love getting up early, despite my equal love of sleeping in. It's quiet, which it almost never is in this house, and I'm the only one up. I can sit and write, or draw, or just get a head-start on schoolwork. It's the definition of peace.

Except this morning, all of my siblings decided to get up with me.

Anyway, I pulled out my laptop despite their racket and continued my work on the Etsy store. I finally got everything listed that I have so far, and with a great internal celebration, clicked, "Next."

Payment Information. The very name sent a shudder through me.

I opened my very own bank account last week, and got a debit card. As my mom put it, I'm "all grown up with nowhere to go." (Which is, sadly, quite true.)

So I began filling out the payment information. Card numbers and social security and what-the-heck-does-this-even-mean and then...

You know those lovely red words that let you know when you've filled something out wrong? I hate them with a burning passion.

You must be at least Eighteen (18) years old to open an Etsy store.

Hai's face fits my mood.
I hate you, dear Etsy.

On to less depressing matters.

I read a book yesterday. Yes, I read a lot of books. But this one... this one was different. It was special. I actually liked it. And still like it. I'd reread it right now if I knew where the copy was.

It's called Story Thieves, by James Riley.

It's actually a Middle-Grade book, I believe. But I thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommend to everyone. Especially writers. If you're a writer, read this book. Read it now. The author jokes are hilarious.

Life is boring when you live in the real world, instead of starring in your own book series. Owen knows that better than anyone, what with the real world’s homework and chores.
But everything changes the day Owen sees the impossible happen—his classmate Bethany climb out of a book in the library. It turns out Bethany’s half-fictional and has been searching every book she can find for her missing father, a fictional character.
Bethany can’t let anyone else learn her secret, so Owen makes her a deal: All she has to do is take him into a book in Owen’s favorite Kiel Gnomenfoot series, and he’ll never say a word. Besides, visiting the book might help Bethany find her father…
…Or it might just destroy the Kiel Gnomenfoot series, reveal Bethany’s secret to the entire world, and force Owen to live out Kiel Gnomenfoot’s final (very final) adventure.
I can't even recommend it strongly enough. The characters are amazing. The plot twists are the best. The dialogue is realistic (a big one for me). And the entire thing is absolutely hilarious. I was laughing so many times through it...

I'm also planning a Kiel Gnomenfoot cosplay. And convincing either my sister or Nixie to do Bethany so we can walk around and just be a fictional character and his half-fictional companion. It would be way too much fun.

Signing off to go eat breakfast now. I think there's pancakes left from yesterday.

Tuesday, March 24, 2015

My brain needs to chill with the character ideas.

Sometimes my brain is completely dry. I sit down with my sketchbook and my pencils, and the only thing I can do is twirl the tip across the page in circles. No ideas. Useless brain.

And then there are times when I honestly believe I'm going to start losing track of all of these characters if my brain gives me one more of them.

I'm finally getting the hang of coloring with Photoshop.
On Sunday after church was over, me, Nixie, and her cousin were sitting together and chatting about anime, MBTI types, and Sherlock. (Okay, so I was doing most of the Sherlock talking.) Nixie kept pulling up various MBTI character charts, while the cousin and I discussed whether or not we thought the type was accurate. (He enjoys MBTI almost as much as I do. I think Nixie only knows about it because I can't shut up.)

After that, I headed off to my archery awards banquet (where I actually didn't get anything special, for the first year ever. Not complaining though, because this year was the first time I got an actual competition award). I cosplayed as an ENTJ schoolgirl from Poppy's story who I seriously need to name because I adore cosplaying as her. The ENTJ colors are just way too much fun, and the skirt I wear suits her exactly.
ENTJ school crest. My sister actually made one of these for every single personality type. (They also have banners under the crest with the type "label," but I don't have those versions saved on my laptop.)
So anyway, after I got home from the banquet, I started texting Nixie while doodling with my pen tablet.
This happened...
And then this happened.
(There's a lovely example of what happens when my fingers work too fast for my brain in there...)
So that's what I'm working on now. I don't know when I'll actually have time to write/draw it (what's the proper word here anyway? A manga is kind of both...) but I really, really love the idea. Maybe over the summer.

Random chibi.
What I doodled today when I should have been working on Algebra... *innocent smile*

Prepare for sketch dump.

Nixie's character Amie. Colored pencils and inks.

Princess Kasseiopeia Karlisla. Or Kas for short. (Copics.)

You guys remember Liesl, my December Drawing Challenge character? I redid her character design. (Colored pencils and inks.)

Random eye. Colored pencils.
I've now got the overwhelming desire to go work on some outfit designs. I'll probably be back to post them when I'm done. (Will you guys be able to handle that? Two posts in one day?)
